Unconventional Drilling

Overview

Overview icon

Unconventional reservoirs are traditionally defined as tight formations with very low permeability. However, this phrase may also be used to describe shale, coalbed methane, heavy oil and tar sands, and gas‑hydrate reservoirs. These reservoirs typically require horizontal well profiles with relatively long laterals. In many cases, the optimal drilling plan is to drill the curve and lateral intervals in a single run at the highest possible rate of penetration (ROP).

Challenges

Maximize rate of penetration

Achieving maximum ROP without compromising wellbore integrity

Improve geosteering

Landing and navigating the well into the geological reservoir target and staying within zone

Avoid stuck pipe

Reducing risk of stuck pipe and lost downhole tools

Mitigate lost circulation and kicks

Managing the relationship between hydraulics and borehole geology

Maintain drillstring integrity

Monitoring key metrics to stay within safe operating parameters

Drilling Integrated Approach

After recognizing the challenges and risks of drilling in unconventional fields, the critical task is how to avoid, manage, and/or mitigate them. The Drilling Advisor solution — which combines drilling optimization, wellbore stability, and drilling hazard management — offers a proven methodology that is effective in all types of fields.
